Ethers to peroxides
WebPeroxides are shock-sensitive and can be violently explosive in concentrated form or as solids. Others can result in rapid polymerization and can initiate a runaway, explosive reaction. The most commonly used peroxide-forming chemicals are: diethyl ether (ethyl ether), tetrahydrofuran (THF), dioxane. WebPeroxides are a class of chemical compounds with unusual stability problems and are one of the most hazardous classes of chemicals routinely handled in the laboratory. Peroxides can be formed via intentional chemical reactions (i.e., ozonolysis), but just as hazardous is the inadvertent peroxide formation during storage of certain compounds.

WebEthers Organic peroxides are formed in ethers via a mechanism catalyzed by heat, light and oxygen. In addition to potentially interfering with a given method due to their high reactivity, ether peroxides are highly unstable and represent a potential explosion hazard at concentrations above 100ppm. Webfor a variety of forms of chromatography, provided that the ether is not going to be subsequently evaporated. Note, however, that peroxides bind to alumina and to some other adsorbents. This may concentrate peroxides at the top of a column, resulting in a hazard if the column is not washed with a suitable solvent and is then allowed to dry out.
